The new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is an exciting and ambitious project for all involved. The original 4.5 mile long bridge opened to traffic in 1936, however, the eastern span’s rigid structure failed to be seismically sound during the Loma Prieta quake of 1989. The new eastern span will be a 2-mile elevated roadway which will be seismically safe enough to resist a major earthquake, and will offer stunning views of San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island.
This project is a unique endeavor that stands alone throughout the country, in flood control and conservation efforts. Environmentally friendly “living river” concept, developed primarily by Napa Flood District in conjunction with many civic organizations, restores and enhances the natural aspects of the river while at the same time providing flood protection for the surrounding communities.
